Add Charm and Beauty to Your Home with Window Flower Boxes

Add Charm and Beauty to Your Home with Window Flower Boxes

Do you enjoy flowering plants even after the spring and summer months? A window flower box can provide you with beautiful blooming flowers for the entire year. Best of all, window flower boxes are easy to care for, fun to look at, and can add another level of charm and beauty to your home. If you are interested in creating some wooden flower boxes for your home this fall, here is what you should do:

Buy or Make a Window Box

If you enjoy a DIY challenge, then building your own custom-made wooden flower boxes can be a fun project. But if you don’t have the time, skill or patience to make a flower box, there are plenty of pre-made window boxes in a variety of styles, materials, and colors to choose. First, measure your windows to make sure you select a flower box that will fit nicely in the space under your window. Also, make sure your window box has drainage holes in the bottom for excess water. If they don’t, drilling a few holes in the bottom of your boxes can serve as your DIY contribution. We recommend using a liner inside your window box so that you can easily change out your flower displays each season or when the mood strikes you.

Choosing Your Plants

It’s best to select hardy flowering plants that will do well during the cooler months of the year. Some varieties will even survive a light frost or two. There are also many different fall-friendly plants and flowers to choose from, including:

  • Chrysanthemums: a plant within the daisy family with bright colors and many different varieties. Care is straightforward, making them a fall favorite.
  • Leatherleaf Sedge: a tufted, evergreen, perennial grass that has narrow, copper-bronze leaves. It is a beautiful addition to any flower box or garden.
  • Flowering Kale: a showy, ornamental, low-lying plant with colorful leaves that range from rose to green hues.
  • Marigold: these look like a carnation or a daisy and produce beautifully colored flowers in clusters - many of which are perfect for fall decor.

Make a Pleasing Arrangement

Start by placing your two or three largest plants into the flower box so that your plants with oversized blooms will be the main focal point. Then, fill around them with a few smaller plants and one or two plants that will hang over the front of the box. When working with window boxes, you can cluster the plants a little closer together than you normally would in a traditional garden. This is because the plants in your window box change with the seasons – so crowding the plants together in a wooden flower box is perfectly fine to do.

Be Sure and Water Thoroughly

Once you select and place your plants in your window flower box, be sure to water them right away. This will help settle the soil and plants together and allow nutrients in the soil to be absorbed quickly by the roots. After that, you can switch to watering about once a week for the rest of the season. You can also add some plant food spikes to the soil periodically to give the soil the micronutrients needed to ensure healthy flowers.

Change Plants Again for Winter

Colder weather doesn’t mean your flower box have to remain empty. As the weather gets colder, fill your flower boxes with winter foliage. Remove all the fall plants (by grabbing your liner) and freshen the soil with some compost. Consider planting new dwarf evergreens, poinsettias, junipers, and flowering heathers. You can even plant pansies and snapdragons if you live in an area where the winter temperatures rarely get below 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
